CUBS THIRD-BASE TRADE DEAL: Chicago Cubs Acquire Yoán Moncada from Angels in $5 Million One-Year Deal to Address Key Infield Void, As Pete Crow-Armstrong Weighs Trade Terms After Contract Extension Fallout

The Chicago Cubs have made a decisive move to bolster their infield depth and address one of their most glaring roster weaknesses by acquiring veteran third baseman Yoán Moncada from the Los Angeles Angels. The 29-year-old infielder joins the Cubs on a one-year, $5 million contract in what many are calling a smart, low-risk move with significant upside for a team aiming to stay competitive in the NL Central race.

Moncada, a switch-hitter known for his defensive prowess and flashes of offensive potential, is expected to immediately slot into the starting third base role, which has been a revolving door of underperformance for the Cubs this season. His arrival is seen as a much-needed upgrade at the hot corner, where the team has struggled to find consistency and stability both defensively and at the plate.

The former top prospect and Cuban standout brings a wealth of experience and a veteran presence to a young Cubs clubhouse. Despite dealing with injury setbacks in recent seasons, Moncada remains a dynamic player when healthy. Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer expressed confidence in Moncada’s ability to rebound, calling him a “proven competitor who can give us quality at-bats and shore up our infield.”

The Moncada deal also comes amid rising drama surrounding one of the team’s brightest young stars, Pete Crow-Armstrong. The 22-year-old outfielder, considered a cornerstone of the Cubs’ future, recently declined a contract extension rumored to be in the range of $75–100 million. While the team had hoped to lock him in long-term, Crow-Armstrong has made it clear that he is keeping his options open.

Speaking to reporters after the Moncada trade was announced, Crow-Armstrong revealed he and his representation have presented new terms for consideration—fueling speculation that trade discussions could intensify if negotiations stall. “I want what’s best for my development and career,” he said, hinting that his future in Chicago isn’t guaranteed unless the front office meets his expectations.

With the third-base void filled and a rising star’s future hanging in the balance, the Cubs’ midseason maneuvering has become one of the most intriguing storylines to watch as the trade deadline approaches.
