W.V. SOFTBALL: West Virginia Softball Earns No. 1 Ranking for First Time in Program History
For the first time in program history, the West Virginia University softball team has climbed to the top of the national rankings, claiming the No. 1 spot in the latest Softball America Top 25 poll. This historic achievement comes after a dominant stretch of play in which the Mountaineers showcased exceptional talent, teamwork, and consistency against top-tier competition.
The team’s rise to the top is the result of weeks of high-level performance, including a string of impressive victories over ranked opponents and powerhouse programs. West Virginia’s offense has been relentless, averaging over six runs per game during their current winning streak, while the pitching staff has been nearly untouchable, boasting one of the lowest earned run averages in the nation. Behind standout players on both sides of the ball and a coaching staff that has instilled a culture of discipline and belief, the Mountaineers have elevated themselves from underdogs to national contenders.
Head coach Amanda Lewis, in her fifth season at the helm, credited the team’s success to hard work and unity. “This group has been special from day one,” she said. “They’ve bought into the system, trusted each other, and played for something bigger than themselves. Being ranked No. 1 is an incredible honor, but we’re staying focused on our goals and the challenges ahead.”
This milestone is not only a major step forward for the program but also a moment of pride for the university and the entire Mountaineer community. Fans have rallied behind the team, with attendance and support reaching new highs as West Virginia continues to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
Star pitcher Alyssa Grant, who leads the Big 12 in strikeouts, said the ranking reflects the team’s hard work but isn’t the final destination. “We’re proud, but we know the job’s not done,” she said. “We want to keep winning, keep improving, and hopefully bring a championship back to Morgantown.”
With their sights set on postseason success and a potential run at the Women’s College World Series, the Mountaineers are proving they belong among the nation’s elite—and now, officially, at the very top.
