TEXAS LONGHORNS TO HONOR EARL CAMPBELL WITH STATUE AT DKR-STADIUM
The University of Texas has announced a momentous tribute to one of the most iconic figures in college football history. The Texas Longhorns will celebrate the remarkable legacy of Earl Campbell by erecting a statue in his honor at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, ensuring that future generations of fans and players alike will forever remember the impact of the “Tyler Rose.”
Campbell, who starred at Texas from 1974 to 1977, is widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in NCAA and NFL history. During his college career, he rushed for over 4,400 yards, earned All-American honors, and in 1977 became the first Longhorn to win the Heisman Trophy. Known for his bruising running style, unmatched determination, and ability to carry his team on his back, Campbell transformed the Longhorns into a national powerhouse during his time in Austin.
Following his collegiate success, Campbell was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. His professional career was nothing short of legendary—earning NFL MVP honors, multiple rushing titles, and five Pro Bowl appearances. Yet, despite all his professional accolades, Campbell has always remained deeply connected to the University of Texas and the Austin community.
The decision to place his statue at DKR-Stadium represents more than just a celebration of his athletic achievements—it is a recognition of his lifelong influence on the program, the university, and the state of Texas. Administrators explained that the monument will serve as a symbol of perseverance, greatness, and Longhorn pride. Positioned prominently outside the stadium, it will greet fans on game days and remind young athletes of the standard Campbell set nearly five decades ago.
Current head coach Steve Sarkisian praised the move, calling Campbell “the embodiment of Texas Football.” Fans and alumni have also expressed overwhelming excitement, noting that this honor was long overdue for a player whose name is synonymous with excellence.
For many, the statue is more than bronze and stone—it is a testament to a man whose power, grace, and humility made him a true Texas legend. With this announcement, the Longhorns ensure that the “Tyler Rose” will forever bloom in Austin.
