Patrick Beverley informs reporter that she cannot interview him since she does not listen to his podcast.
Patrick Beverley has faced criticism for his harsh remarks to ESPN’s Malinda Adams during his post-game news conference. Beverley interrupted a reporter’s question to ask Adams if she had subscribed to his podcast, The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone, and when she responded no, he urged her not to ask any more questions and to go.
Beverley: “You cannot interview me then. “No disrespect.”
Beverley: “Can you kindly relocate that mic or simply get out of the circle for me, ma’am, if you are not a subscriber to my podcast? I’d appreciate it.
That is incredibly unprofessional. If you thought this was merely Beverley’s frustration about his Milwaukee Bucks’ elimination from the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers, you were mistaken. According to CBS’s Jack Maloney, the guard hasn’t interacted with a single reporter in Milwaukee who hasn’t subscribed to his podcast since he came midseason.
“This is unfortunately nothing new, Beverley has refused to talk to any of us in Milwaukee who do not subscribe to his podcast since he arrived at the trade deadline.”
While earlier events did not make news, this one certainly has. Adams is one of ESPN’s most regarded characters, and I would not be shocked if the NBA stepped in. Players cannot refuse to speak to a reporter just because he or she does not subscribe to a podcast.
This isn’t the first time Beverley has been in hot water for his actions toward a lady. ESPN’s Marc J. Spears brought up the controversial discussion he had with Michele Roberts, executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, at the Bubble in Orlando.
“First, Michele Roberts was disrespected in the NBA Bubble in front of other NBA players, and now this…” He is who he is. Respect to Malinda Adams, a brilliant seasoned producer, for her professionalism despite the foolishness.”
In case you forgot, Beverley frequently stopped Roberts while she was discussing the financial implications of leaving Orlando. He disagreed with her rationale, and when Roberts gently requested if she might proceed, Beverley said, “No, I pay your salary.” It sparked outrage, and players such as Chris Paul and Udonis Haslem made it clear to Beverley that such disrespect would not be accepted.
