CFL QB Heads Set Records Following Broncos Minicamp Tryout

Wilson, in order to challenge starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham, Denver acquired Zach Wilson through a deal with the New York Jets and chose Bo Nix with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 draft.

But they also welcomed John Matocha, the quarterback for Colorado School of Mines, to rookie minicamp. Matocha had a great collegiate career, breaking records.

However, none of the players that the Broncos tried out ended up signing. Matocha will so be joining the CFL.

On May 27, 9News’ Mike Klis tweeted on X, stating, “According to sources, former Colorado School of Mines standout QB John Matocha is signing with CFL’s Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday.” “Earlier this month, he went through a three-day tryout with the Broncos.”

Matocha, who is 5-foot-11, is underweight. However, he was the Division II Player of the Year’s runner-up in 2023 for the Harlon Hill Award.

The previous year, after throwing for 4,778 yards and 52 touchdowns, he won the honor.

Matocha was a three-time Academic All-American who concluded his record-breaking college career with nearly 2,000 yards and 28 more touchdowns gained on the ground. He is going to the Argonauts, who kick off their preseason on May 31.

Despite losing to the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup, the Argonauts concluded the previous season with the best record in the CFL at 16-2.

Former Broncos quarterback John Matocha Joins CFL

The Argonauts have other quarterbacks from the Broncos than Matocha. He joins Chad Kelly, a former seventh-round choice of the Broncos who saw just one regular season game in 2018 (one appearance).
