According to a report from college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Michigan is one of the two schools former Florida State forward Jamir Watkins plans to visit this week, along with St. John’s.
Watkins transferred to Florida State after two seasons at VCU. The 6-foot-7 forward was the leading scorer for the Seminoles last year, among players who played more than one game. In 28.1 minutes per game, he averaged 15.6 points, six rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 45.7 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from three and 79.5 percent from the free throw line.
Watkins is a solid player on both ends of the floor. He has great hands, moves his feet well, and has a high basketball IQ that helped him average 1.9 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He’s a really smart player with good court vision, has a good feel for the pick-and-roll, and is real fluid as a driver for his size, finishing around bigger defenders at the rim.
The more Watkins video you see, the more sense Dusty May’s motivation makes in getting him out of the portal.
Pick-and-rolls are Watkins’ strong suit, and May has a fondness for running bases full of them. Although May loves to play two point guards at once, he can play effectively off lead guards even if the offense doesn’t always flow through him. Although his mid-range game is strong and he is efficient at the free-throw line, you would still like to see him improve his three-point shooting. He is a versatile guard, and based on the team’s official roster, the Wolverines might need another wing player.
It makes sense to bench Watkins if he decides to remain with the Wolverines.
