Jak Jones may have achieved the highlight of his snooker career so far at this year’s World Championship but the quest for success means he is not feeling over the moon about it.
Jones said to Metro, “You get there and you’re looking at the next thing.” It seems like you’re never happy, no matter what.
The 30-year-old stunned everyone by making it through qualification and into the World Championship final, where Kyren Wilson defeated him 18–14.
It was his first professional final, and the £200,000 he took home was by far his largest payout. However, he was too competitive to fully enjoy the incredible run.
“They did something small in the club where I play, which was nice, but it’s weird to celebrate losing in the championship game,” Jones remarked. Even though it was significant, I didn’t feel like I had accomplished something enormous when I was there. Although others would disagree, I didn’t feel right about celebrating defeat.
The Welshman is not the only snooker player that finds it difficult to be satisfied with their results. They don’t always feel happy when they play well because they expect to perform well, therefore they become frustrated when they don’t.
“I just don’t feel like it’s that big because I’ve played since I was 10 or 11 years old,” Jones said. “You play snooker every day, nonstop.”
“Perhaps I would have felt something if I had been flying through the competition.” Although I didn’t play well at all outside of my most recent qualifier versus Zhou Yuelong, I thought I performed well in that game, which has given me a lot of confidence. I’ve played poorly and made it to the global final four frames from being the champion. I can manage it if I play well. That gives me a great deal of confidence.
Jones went from being ranked 44th in the world to 14th, but once more, he feels unsatisfied and wants to keep moving forward.
