Former Forward with the Boston Bruins Tyler Bertuzzi Has Ties to the Previous Team.
One of the best free agents that may become available on July 1st is Tyler Bertuzzi, a forward with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bertuzzi and the Maple Leafs both want to maintain their partnership, but as of right now, no new agreement has materialized.
Bertuzzi will be a highly sought-after player if the Maple Leafs decide to take a different course and he becomes a free
agency. This is because he plays a highly chippy style in addition to being an attacking top-six player with significant impact. Additionally, he is still only 29 years old, meaning he has many more years to live in his prime.
It’s interesting to note that one of Bertuzzi’s previous teams may consider him as a target. Adam Proteau discussed
the possibility of the Detroit Red Wings trying to resurrect their previous star in a recent piece on the main page of The Hockey News.
With somewhat more than $30 million in cap space at now, Proteau pointed out that the Red Wings are in a great
position to make some purchases. Even if they have prominent RFAs like Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider who
need to resign, they still have the funds to go for Bertuzzi. Proteau also mentioned that the Red Wings want to advance, so having a talented winger like Bertuzzi returning would be advantageous.
Bertuzzi was acquired by the Bruins from the Red Wings before to the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline. The Red Wings
captain Dylan Larkin, who had become close to Bertuzzi while playing together in Detroit, famously broke down in
tears when the team traded for Bertuzzi. Maybe Detroit may try to sign the Sudbury, Ontario native again if he becomes a free agent for this reason as well.
Like with the Bruins, there are undoubtedly good reasons for the Red Wings to look at a reunion with Bertuzzi. It will be interesting to watch where the scrappy forward ends up going forward.
