Montreal Canadiens have signed Oliver Kapanen to a three year entry level deal. Kapanen was the 64th selection in the 2021 NHL draft and has played in the Finnish top league the last three seasons with KalPa from Kuopio.

Even if Kapanen’s growth has been gradual, it has always been in the right direction. He took a while to get into hockey after completing his National Service this past summer, but he had been getting better ever since the new year, and he eventually burst into the playoffs as KalPa’s first line center and top scorer. For the most part, Canadiens supporters have forgotten about him due to his poor improvement.

The company Timrå, with which Kapanen contracted before this year’s World Championships, has thanked him and provided an explanation of what would happen going ahead.

“Kapanen will travel to Montreal for training on September 18; if he is not selected for the roster, he will, per the terms of his contract, return to Timrå.”
