Norse gods and goddesses: 14 of the most significant gods that the Vikings worshipped.

The Vegvísir, a symbol often associated with Norse mythology and Viking culture, has become a popular motif in contemporary Norse-themed art, tattoos, and jewelry. However, despite its widespread modern use and association with Viking lore, there is no archaeological evidence that suggests the Vegvísir was used or known in Viking times.

The term “Vegvísir” itself is Icelandic and translates to “wayfinder” or “guidepost.” It first appeared in the 17th-century Icelandic grimoire called the “Huld Manuscript,” which is a compilation of various magical symbols and spells. This manuscript, and consequently the Vegvísir symbol, emerged long after the Viking Age had ended.

During the Viking Age (approximately from the late 8th to the late 11th century), Vikings relied on a variety of navigational aids and tools for their extensive sea voyages, such as sunstones, compasses (which were introduced to Europe later), and their knowledge of celestial bodies and natural landmarks. The Vegvísir, however, does not appear in any Viking-era artifacts, runestones, or sagas.

The misconception likely stems from the romanticization of Viking culture in the 19th and 20th centuries, where symbols and artifacts were sometimes appropriated or invented to fit contemporary narratives of Viking mysticism and adventure. The Vegvísir’s association with Norse mythology and its appearance in Icelandic manuscripts centuries after the Viking Age contributed to its current popularity as a symbol of guidance and protection.

While the Vegvísir may not have Viking origins, its significance today lies in its representation of navigation through life’s challenges and uncertainties, drawing on the enduring fascination with Norse history and mythology. It serves as a reminder of the cultural impact and enduring legacy of the Vikings, even as we separate historical fact from modern interpretation and myth.
