Former AFL player and radio personality Stephen Rowe sparked controversy on Adelaide’s 5AA when he criticized Gen Z and millennial Australians for not having children, labeling them as ‘selfish.’ His unscripted rant followed broadcaster Stacey Lee’s report on new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing a birthrate decline to 1.5 children per woman.
Rowe, a former Adelaide Crows star, expressed his frustration, saying, “That just tells me how selfish our society is. Back in my day, you fell in love, kept a full-time job, had fun, and had a baby. You either rented or bought a house and built a family.”
He went on to criticize modern priorities, stating, “Now it’s all about holidays, Instagram, clothes, and events like the Adelaide Cup. I see it in my own kids.”
When Lee pointed out that many young Australians struggle to afford housing, Rowe dismissed the concern, saying, “Live within your means. Only buy a house you can afford.”
He added, “I think modern people are selfish. You want everything right away. Fall in love, have a baby, and things will work out.” His remarks left co-host Lee baffled, as she continued to emphasize economic pressures faced by younger generations.
