Warriors expected to trade for $101 million forward from Lakers
As the Golden State Warriors’ championship window begins to close, the team’s front office is actively exploring ways to bring another title back to the Bay Area, according to Daily Mail’s Russ Weakland.
Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is under contract through the 2026-27 season, but his declining performance and the lack of a supporting star have hindered the team’s ability to win games. Currently ranked 12th in the Western Conference, 14 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Warriors are working to acquire a superstar to complement Curry and improve their playoff chances.
Although Curry has publicly stated that he doesn’t want the team to make a “desperate” move that could “deplete the future” of the franchise, sources suggest that the team is still pursuing a trade.
Sources tell DailyMail.com that the Warriors are eyeing a major move to acquire either Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James or disgruntled Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler, despite Curry’s objections.
While Curry has expressed reluctance to make drastic changes, behind the scenes, the Warriors front office is eager to make a splash, engaging in discussions with the Lakers and Heat about potentially acquiring James or Butler before the trade deadline.
However, pulling off such a significant trade could prove more difficult than anticipated, as both James and Butler have no-trade clauses in their contracts. Additionally, the Lakers and Heat would likely demand multiple future draft picks and expiring contracts in any deal.
James, like Curry, has faced challenges in the 2024-25 season. The 20-time All-Star is averaging 23.7 points per game with impressive shooting splits, but the Lakers have struggled to find success, leaving fans frustrated with the team’s performance. With both the Warriors and Lakers underperforming, and Curry in need of offensive support, a high-profile trade involving James may be a real possibility.
