Commanders and Jayden Daniels Shock Top-Seeded Lions
The Washington Commanders are no longer just a feel-good story—they’ve become legitimate contenders for a title in one of the most improbable seasons in franchise history.
With a 45-31 victory over the Detroit Lions on Saturday, the Commanders (14-5) secured a spot in the NFC Championship Game. They will face the winner of Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams (3 p.m. ET, NBC).
This marks the Commanders’ first trip to the NFC Championship Game since the 1991 season. Just last week, they celebrated their first playoff victory since 2005.
The team’s offense was dominant, punting only once and racking up 482 total yards against a Lions squad that finished the regular season 15-2. Quarterback Jayden Daniels delivered another stellar performance, throwing for 299 yards and two touchdowns while adding 52 rushing yards. The offense accounted for 38 points, with safety Quan Martin contributing a pick-six for an additional touchdown.
The Commanders’ resurgence comes just a year after a dismal 4-13 season that prompted sweeping changes to the front office, coaching staff, and roster. From 1992—the year after their last Super Bowl win—until 2023, Washington had the NFL’s fourth-worst winning percentage. They hadn’t posted a winning record since 2016, but this season, they’ve managed to overcome years of struggles.
Here are the key takeaways from Saturday night for both teams.
