The San Diego Padres’ quiet offseason is raising concerns as they watch rivals like the Dodgers and others across MLB make significant moves.
Losing out on talents like Roki Sasaki and Tanner Scott, both of whom joined the Dodgers, has left the Padres lagging behind in terms of roster upgrades.
With other teams actively retooling, San Diego’s lack of major acquisitions could put them at a disadvantage as Opening Day approaches.
One potential target for the Padres could be right-hander Dylan Cease, who recently avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $13.75 million deal.
Cease has been mentioned in trade rumors, and acquiring him could bolster the Padres’ pitching rotation without committing to a long-term free-agent deal. However, any move for Cease would likely require parting with current talent, a difficult decision for a team seeking to stay competitive.
Meanwhile, Fernando Tatis Jr. has been hard at work preparing for the 2025 season. After an injury-plagued 2024 campaign in which he played 102 games and posted a solid .276 batting average with 21 home runs, Tatis appears determined to return stronger.
His recent Instagram post showcasing intense kettlebell workouts and tagging Mount Everest suggests he’s aiming for peak performance.
The Padres’ success in 2025 may hinge on their ability to reinforce the roster before the season starts and the health and production of their key players, including Tatis Jr. Without significant changes, the team risks falling behind in a competitive NL West.
