LSU head coach Brian Kelly recently provided an encouraging update on freshman quarterback Colin Hurley, who was involved in a serious car accident in January.
Hurley, 17, crashed his vehicle into a tree near the south gates of LSU’s campus in the early hours of January 16. First responders found him unresponsive but breathing, with a significant facial laceration.
Following the accident, Hurley returned to his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, to continue his recovery with family.
Coach Kelly has visited him multiple times and shared positive news about his progress. In a recent press conference, Kelly stated, “I’ve been there to see him on a number of occasions.
Progress is real; he is back in Jacksonville, and reports in talking to his dad yesterday were really positive.”
Kelly emphasized the optimism surrounding Hurley’s recovery, noting, “This is another scenario where there’s a recovery process for him. I think everybody’s optimistic.”
Before the accident, he was anticipated to compete for the backup quarterback position in the upcoming season, alongside senior Garrett Nussmeier and sophomore transfer Michael Van Buren.
However, with Hurley’s recovery timeline uncertain, the team’s depth at quarterback may be affected as spring camp approaches.
The LSU community remains hopeful for Hurley’s full recovery.
His family expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “Colin would like to thank the first responders, the incredible doctors and nurses at Our Lady of the Lake Health, and the many Tiger Fans for their care and compassion.
” They added, “We are confident that Colin will make a full recovery from this terrible accident.”
As of now, there is no specific timetable for Hurley’s return to football activities.
Coach Kelly and the LSU program are prioritizing his health and well-being, taking a day-to-day approach to his recovery.
The entire LSU community continues to support Hurley and his family during this challenging time.
