The Arkansas Razorbacks might still find some post-Liberty Bowl value in wide receiver Dazmin James after all.
By now, most fans are familiar with the remarkable story of James and his three catches. An unknown wide receiver for the Razorbacks, James emerged to haul in three passes against one of the weakest pass defenses in college football. One of those catches turned into a school-record long touchdown. After that brief but memorable performance, James departed, seeking to capitalize on his sudden fame and eventually landing at Cal.
Some fans were upset that head coach Sam Pittman allowed James to leave, believing the receiver might have had untapped potential. However, there’s now a unique chance to leverage James’ legacy at Arkansas.
This week, during coaches’ meetings, a proposal has been introduced to create a single 10-day transfer portal window in early January. The proposal has significant support and is expected to pass with minimal opposition.
If implemented, this change could increase the likelihood of players staying with their teams through bowl games—something Arkansas has struggled with in recent years. While the Razorbacks have developed a habit of winning bowl games, they’ve often done so with rosters that barely resemble the regular-season team.
Pittman now has the opportunity to reframe bowl games as a “transfer portal showcase.” Players considering a transfer would have extra motivation to perform well during bowl season, turning it into a platform to boost their value.
For those hesitant, Pittman could point to James as the perfect example. A quick highlight reel of James’ three catches, paired with a reminder that a benchwarmer became a sought-after portal player, might be all it takes to inspire others to make the most of their opportunities.
