Trump’s Deportation Plan Reportedly Set to Begin Next Week in Chicago
The Trump administration plans to launch “post-inauguration” immigration raids in Chicago next week, according to two sources familiar with the plans and documents reviewed by The New York Times. This marks an initial step in President-elect Donald J. Trump’s ambition to lead the largest deportation effort in U.S. history.
The operation, named “Operation Safeguard” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is set to begin on Tuesday, the day after Trump’s inauguration, and continue until the following Monday. However, the exact dates are still being finalized and may change.
The scale of the operation remains unclear, though ICE regularly conducts deportations across U.S. cities. For this effort, the agency is taking extra measures to intensify enforcement and has linked the operation to Trump’s inauguration in a communication sent to agency personnel.
Hundreds of ICE agents have been asked to volunteer for the initiative, with approximately 150 agents expected to be deployed to Chicago.
For Trump, the sight of immigration officers in tactical gear apprehending undocumented immigrants in a Democratic stronghold like Chicago could serve as a powerful statement. The incoming administration aims to send a clear message about its crackdown on undocumented immigration and its stance against sanctuary cities—such as Chicago—that decline to cooperate with federal immigration authorities by refusing to detain immigrants for deportation.
