Texas QB Quinn Ewers announces decision to enter NFL draft, skipping final year of college eligibility
Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers announced Wednesday morning on X (formerly Twitter) that he is declaring for the NFL draft after three seasons with the Longhorns, opting to forgo his final year of eligibility.
“Playing football on the Forty Acres has been a lifelong dream,” Ewers shared in his video announcement. “The past three years have been some of the best of my life, and the relationships I’ve built with my coaches and teammates will last forever. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent my home state and the best university in the world. After prayer and careful consideration, I’m officially declaring for the NFL draft.”
Ewers’ decision comes after he told ESPN in an interview ahead of the College Football Playoff Cotton Bowl semifinal that he did not anticipate returning to college football next season.
The 6-foot-2 quarterback began his college career at Ohio State in 2021 before transferring to Texas. Ironically, his collegiate journey ended at the hands of the Buckeyes and his former roommate, Ohio State defensive lineman Jack Sawyer. In a pivotal fourth-and-goal moment late in the fourth quarter, Ewers was sacked by Sawyer, who forced a fumble that led to an 83-yard scoop-and-score touchdown.
Ewers faced multiple injuries this past season, including an oblique strain sustained in Week 3 against Texas-San Antonio, which sidelined him for two games. Later in the season, a high-ankle sprain impacted his mobility and led Texas to use backup quarterback Arch Manning for running plays during critical moments, including the CFP.
