In a surprising turn of events, the Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed former cornerback Steven Nelson, who had announced his retirement in June 2024.
Nelson, originally drafted by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, had stepped away from professional football just before the previous Super Bowl.
His return to Kansas City comes as the team prepares for Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nelson’s initial tenure with the Chiefs spanned from 2015 to 2018, during which he developed into a reliable starter in the secondary.
Over his four seasons in Kansas City, he appeared in 52 games, starting 38, and contributed significantly to the defense.
Following his stint with the Chiefs, Nelson continued his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston Texans, amassing a total of 456 tackles and 13 interceptions over nine seasons.
After announcing his retirement in June 2024, Nelson remained away from the game for several months. However, in December 2024, he worked out with the Chiefs and subsequently signed with their practice squad.
This move was seen as a strategic addition, providing depth to a secondary dealing with injuries to key players like Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams.
As the Chiefs approach their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, they have elevated Nelson from the practice squad to the active roster, aiming to bolster their defensive backfield against the formidable Eagles’ offense.
Head coach Andy Reid expressed confidence in Nelson’s abilities, stating, “Steven has always been a smart, physical player. He knows our system, and we believe he can step in and contribute right away.”
Fans have expressed mixed reactions to Nelson’s return, with many hopeful that his veteran presence will provide stability to the defense during the critical matchup.
As the Chiefs prepare to face the Eagles, all eyes will be on how effectively Nelson reintegrates into the lineup and contributes to the team’s pursuit of another Super Bowl title.
