Wolves Women are set to clash with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns this Sunday for the first Black Country derby of the season.
The Old Gold arrive at the derby on a high, boasting a six-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, which was bolstered by a solid 2-0 victory over Rugby Borough last Sunday. Charlotte Greengrass stole the show with a stunning brace at the SEAH Stadium, helping Dan McNamara’s team climb to third in the league standings.
In contrast, West Brom sits in seventh place, having secured 10 points from their first eight matches. Their most recent outing ended in disappointment, with a 2-1 defeat at Hull City, although they showcased their attacking prowess in a prior home league match, where they netted five goals against Stourbridge.
Wolves have dominated this local rivalry, winning their last 10 encounters against West Brom. The last meeting between the two teams took place at Molineux in March, where Wolves triumphed 2-0, completing a league double for the 2023/24 season. McNamara’s squad also eliminated West Brom from the Challenge Cup during their previous encounters.
On their last trip to the Hawthorns in March 2023, Wolves secured a convincing 3-1 victory, with Beth Roberts and Destiney Toussaint scoring two goals apiece. That night was particularly memorable as Anna Price became the all-time record appearance holder for Wolves Women.
As the excitement builds for this derby, both teams will be eager to make their mark in this fierce local rivalry!
WHAT THE GAFFER SAID
“We always emphasize that one fixture doesn’t need any hype from me, and that’s the Black Country derby.
“The fact that it’s taking place at the Hawthorns adds an exciting dimension. There’s been a lot of chatter from West Brom, but I made it clear after our 1-0 victory against Burnley that last Sunday’s result means nothing unless we deliver at West Brom—we need to go there and perform.
“They’re a solid side with some exceptional individual talent. We’ll need to win those battles again to earn the right to play our game.
“The girls are in a great mindset. We faced a challenging summer, but now, when you see where they are and what they’re delivering on and off the pitch, it’s truly remarkable.”
