Duke sophomore forward Mark Mitchell enters the transfer portal
Duke sophomore Mark Mitchell will enter the transfer portal.
Another big name will be looking for a new home as Duke forward Mark Mitchell has confirmed to 247Sports that he will enter the transfer portal.
“I’m excited,” said Mitchell. “I loved my time at Duke but I just wanted something new.”
A former five-star prospect and McDonald’s All-American, the 6-foot-8 sophomore from Kansas City has started 67 of 68 games in his career. As a freshman, Mitchell averaged 9.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game in 27.1 minutes per outing. As a sophomore he improved his overall scoring, rebounding and shooting percentages — despite making just 27.5% from three — while averaging 11.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
Mitchell has versatility on the defensive end, can be a strong finisher around the rim and does have some playmaking ability for others even if the assist numbers don’t jump immediately jump off the page.
The No. 13 ranked player in the class of 2022, Mitchell initially chose Duke over finalists Missouri and UCLA. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.
Now that Mitchell is officially entering the portal, expect him to become one of the most sought after frontcourt players of this spring’s transfer portal cycle.
The transfer portal opened on March 18th and will remain open until Wednesday, May 1st.
Anytime during that window, a player can submit paperwork to their current school to request a transfer and within 48-hours of receiving the paperwork, a player must be submitted into the NCAA Portal database.
Before the window opens on March 18th and after the window closes on May 1st, players who have earned enough credits to graduate are able to enter the portal at any time, listed as a “Grad Transfer”.
Simultaneously, with any coaching movement – whether a head coach is fired or gets another job – players of that team are also given a 30-day window in which they can enter the portal which is not bound to the March 18th-May 1st window.
When a player has officially entered the portal, other schools are permitted to contact the player and begin the recruiting process.
There is also a new rule this off-season that will have major ramifications on the transfer market.
In recent years, players were given a one-time transfer waiver and if transferring for a second time, a waiver had to be granted to be immediately eligible by the NCAA.
