FREE AGENCY DEAL SEALED: Los Angeles Lakers Finally Land Dream 11-Year Veteran Center Clint Capela on a Two-Year, $22 Million Contract

In a bold and strategic move during the 2025 NBA free agency period, the Los Angeles Lakers have officially signed veteran center Clint Capela to a two-year, $22 million contract.

The long-anticipated acquisition fills a major need for the Lakers, who have been searching for a dependable, athletic big man to anchor their defense and provide a reliable lob threat for their star playmakers.

Capela, an 11-year NBA veteran known for his elite rim protection, rebounding, and pick-and-roll finishing, brings much-needed size and experience to the Lakers’ frontcourt. Standing at 6-foot-10 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, Capela has consistently ranked among the league leaders in rebounds and field goal percentage throughout his career.

He spent the past several seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, where he formed a strong interior presence and played a key role in their playoff push in 2021.

The Lakers’ interest in Capela dates back several years, and they finally secured their target in a move that reflects the team’s commitment to win-now basketball. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis still leading the charge, the addition of Capela bolsters the Lakers’ chances to contend in a competitive Western Conference.

His ability to defend the rim, run the floor, and finish lobs makes him an ideal fit alongside Davis, allowing AD to shift back to his more natural power forward position when needed.

“Clint gives us the rim protection, rebounding, and energy we’ve been looking for,” a Lakers front office source said. “He’s a perfect complement to our core and can thrive in our system with players like LeBron and D’Angelo Russell feeding him in the pick-and-roll.”

Capela’s contract, at $11 million per year, is also viewed as a cap-friendly deal, offering the Lakers flexibility to continue building a deeper, more versatile roster.

The signing addresses one of the team’s biggest offseason needs and signals that Los Angeles is all-in on making a serious title run next season.

With training camp a few months away, Lakers fans can now look forward to seeing Clint Capela in purple and gold, where he’ll bring toughness, length, and a vertical threat that could make a major difference in their championship quest.
