Celtic have just completed a potential club-record signing of Adam Idah from Norwich City. The Hoops did not have a buyout clause included in the loan deal for the Irishman and in hindsight, that was an error. Yet, they deserve credit for showing ambition and doing what needed to be done to bring him back to Parkhead on a permanent basis. It is a positive sign for sure.
Another positive sign is their recent link with FC Augsburg’s Arne Engels. It is believed that the German club would look for a transfer fee in the region of £9 million to part ways with the Belgian midfielder.
Of course, that kind of transfer fee would make Engels one of the, if not the outright, most expensive signing in Celtic history. It remains to be seen whether the Scottish champions make a push to sign the 20-year-old this summer. He appears to be keen on the move though.
As reported by Football Insider, Engels has told friends he wants to join Celtic this summer. The Scottish club have opened preliminary talks over a deal for the midfielder and are now preparing to formalise their interest.
Signing someone like Engels would be a show of ambition on the part of Celtic. But at the same time, it could point towards Matt O’Riley leaving the club in the near future.
Celtic have already signed one midfielder this summer in the form of Paulo Bernardo and are being linked with a few others. Engels is not the only name on their radar.
Renato Tapia has also been linked with Celtic. He is a free agent now, having left Celta Vigo. Other than that, there are rumours about interest in Wataru Endo of Liverpool and Tanner Tessmann of Venezia too.
