GOOD NEWS: Oregon Ducks star has break the NFL’s all-time single-season sack record in 2024

Former Oregon Ducks star Kayvon Thibodeaux wants to break the NFL’s all-time single-season sack record in 2024

Kayvon Thibodeaux posted a career year with the New York Giants in 2023.

The edge rusher and former Oregon Ducks star registered a career-high and team-leading 11.5 sacks in 2023. Thibodeaux finished tied for 12th in the NFL in sacks. Thibodeaux’s 11.5 sacks marked a huge jump compared to his 2022 season, when he posted four sacks. The third-year player looks to eclipse his 2023 sack total going into the 2024 season.

“Last year I was able to get 11 and a half sacks,” Thibodeaux told reporters during OTAs last week. “Those are the accolades. Now it’s about getting that respect throughout the league, having teams fear coming to play against us. Just taking everything I do to the next level.”

For Thibodeaux, leveling up his game means going after an all-time single-season sack record of 22.5, set by the Giants’ Michael Strahan in 2001 and equaled by Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt in 2021.

Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux hopes to chase down sack record during 2024 season

“We’re just going to start this off, if you were wondering, I’m going for the record – so don’t ask,” Thibodeaux told reporters. “Every year I’m here, I’m going for Michael Strahan’s record.”

Thibodeaux saw plenty of double-teams last season, but he could face more one-on-one opportunities after the Giants acquired defensive end Brian Burns after a trade with the Carolina Panthers. The two-time Pro Bowl selection posted eight sacks in 2023 and a total of 46 in his first five seasons.

The addition of Burns on the opposite edge and offenses throwing the football more often has Thibodeaux thinking he can approach Strahan’s record.
