Virginia Tech wide receiver/punt returner’s 2024 season in doubt after spring injury
Last season, Tucker Holloway became a key player for the Virginia Tech special teams as a punt returner. In fact, his season was so good that he was named a third-team All-ACC punt returner. After a strong season returning kicks, his 2024 season is in doubt according to head football coach Brent Pry.
Monday, Pry said that Holloway suffered a right knee injury in the spring and that he’s questionable for the 2024 season this fall.
The junior who is also a depth piece at wide receiver, but thanks to a ton of retainment at that position, that lessens the blow if Holloway can’t play. Stephen Gosnell, Ali Jennings, Da’Quan Fleton and Jaylin Lane are all coming back for quarterback Kyron Drones for the 2024 season.
Holloway averaged 12.9 yards a return last season, which was good enough to finish in the Top 10 nationally. He had a long of 66 yards and three others that went 20 yards or longer. If Holloway can’t play, Pry said that Lane is someone who has experience returning punts from his time at Middle Tennessee State before transferring to Virginia Tech. He ranked fourth nationally in 2021 averaging 14.5 yards a return.
If there is one thing that could derail the Hokies in 2024, it’s injuries. Again, if Holloway can’t play, Lane is a good option to return punts with experience. Here’s hoping that Holloway can return in 2024 as he proved how valuable he was in the return game last season setting up the Hokies with good field position.
