Justin Fields is the quintessential dual-threat quarterback, but it appears that the Pittsburgh Steelers want to add a third weapon to his repertoire.

The Steelers acquired Fields from the Chicago Bears earlier this offseason after receiving the No. 1 pick, which they used to draft USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

The decision, however, was unexpected, given Pittsburgh had just signed nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year contract the previous week.

When the Steelers traded for Fields, they quickly stated that he would back up Wilson, although this has been widely speculated.

Regardless, the Steelers are reportedly attempting to use him in any way they can.

Steelers running back Jaylen Warren stated that the team is exploring employing Fields as a kick returner.

Fields’ legs are among the greatest ever seen from a quarterback; he is one of only three gunslingers in NFL history to dash for 1,000 yards in a single season, including Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson.

However, a run-pass option and a planned quarterback run are obviously very different from returning kicks.

It should also be mentioned that the Steelers now have Cordarelle Patterson on their roster, who has extensive experience returning kicks in the NFL.

With OTAs starting later this month, we’ll see how viable this prospective tactic is.
