Heartbreaking news for Wakefield Trinity: He won’t play again

Daryl Powell’s injury verdict on Wakefield Trinity stars after Challenge Cup win

The duo sustained injuries in the victory over Siddal.

Daryl Powell is optimistic that neither Jermaine McGillvary nor Isaiah Vagana have suffered serious injuries after going off during Wakefield Trinity’s Challenge Cup victory over Siddal. McGillvary didn’t return after half-time while Vagana hobbled off after an impressive debut for the club.

Vagana had caught the eye after coming off the bench but looked in some discomfort after the blow, while England international McGillvary was in his tracksuit after half-time. However, Powell revealed that neither injury was thought to be serious and that McGillvary’s withdrawal had somewhat been premeditated regardless.

“He was never going to play the full game,” he told Rugby League Live. “But he got a knock to his ulnar nerve. I was going to rest him next week anyway, so hopefully he’s OK.

“Isaiah got a whack just above his knee. I don’t think it’s anything bad, but we’ll get a check and see if he’s ready to go next week.”

Meanwhile, Powell is hopeful that Mason Lino will be cleared of any wrongdoing after being sent off in the game. Lino was dismissed after a 26-man confrontation that saw Siddal’s Oli Lewis also sent off.

“I asked him what happened; he’s been told he’s elbowed someone, but he doesn’t think he did,” Powell said. “He said he’d gone in to try and break up a skirmish. He’s not that type of player, I don’t think it would have been intentional if he had made contact there. I don’t know what the video will show, to be honest, because he was a distance away and there were a lot of people in there.”
