HISTORIC GIFT: Texas Tech Legend Michael Crabtree Donates Entire $30 Million to University Stadium Project—“Red Raider Pride Lives Within Me”
In a historic and heartfelt gesture that has sent waves of pride through Lubbock and the Texas Tech community, former Red Raiders football legend Michael Crabtree has donated a staggering $30 million to the university’s new stadium renovation project. The announcement came during an emotional ceremony on campus, where Crabtree was joined by university officials, students, and fellow alumni to unveil plans for a transformed Texas Tech football experience—funded in large part by one of its greatest stars.
The donation—one of the largest ever made by a former collegiate athlete to their alma mater—is being directed toward the renovation and expansion of Jones AT&T Stadium, aiming to modernize facilities, expand capacity, and enhance fan engagement. The stadium project is set to include new training spaces, luxury suites, upgraded fan amenities, and a state-of-the-art locker room named in honor of Crabtree.
“This place gave me everything,” Crabtree said, holding back tears. “The Red Raider spirit lives in me every day, no matter where I go. Giving back was never a question—it was a commitment I made long ago.”
Crabtree, a two-time Biletnikoff Award winner and a unanimous All-American during his tenure at Texas Tech (2006–2008), famously caught the game-winning touchdown against Texas in 2008, one of the most iconic plays in college football history. That moment—and his dominant legacy—cemented him as a campus legend and a symbol of Red Raider pride.
Now, over a decade later, Crabtree’s generosity is shaping the next chapter of Texas Tech football. His gift will help propel the program into the national spotlight with facilities that match its ambitions.
“Michael’s contribution isn’t just about dollars—it’s about legacy, commitment, and belief in the power of Red Raider football,” said Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt. “He is investing in future generations of players and fans.”
The university plans to break ground on the renovation later this year, with a projected completion date in time for the 2026 season.
As the crowd chanted “Raider Power!” and Crabtree raised a Texas Tech flag high, it was clear: his heart has never left Lubbock—and now, his legacy will stand tall in the stadium that once made him a household name.
