Blue Chip Ratio’s predictions for Michigan football in 2024.
Every year, Bud Elliott of 247 Sports releases the Blue Chip Ratio, which lists Michigan football as one of the 16 teams with a real chance to win the national title.
Since Elliott began tracking the Blue Chip Ratio in 2011, no team with a recruit percentage of less than 50% of 4- and 5-star prospects has taken home the national title.
In 2013, Florida State boasted a 52 percent Blue Chip Ratio when they clinched the national championship. Similarly, Clemson achieved victory in 2016 with a Blue Chip Ratio of 53 percent. Last season, Michigan’s Blue Chip Ratio stood at 54 percent, which was the third-lowest among national championship-winning teams since the introduction of the Blue Chip Ratio metric.
According to data compiled from the 247 Sports composite rankings spanning the past four recruiting classes, Michigan has consistently secured solid recruiting classes. While they don’t hold the top spot like Ohio State, which boasts a remarkable 90-percent Blue Chip Ratio, Michigan ranks 15th nationally.
Of note, Michigan’s Blue Chip Ratio has increased to 56 percent as they approach the 2024 season, showing improvement from the previous year. Despite not matching the blue-chip talent levels of programs like Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama, this was also the case in the preceding season.
J.J. McCarthy was a great quarterback, and improved coaching was the X-factor. I would also add that Michigan football has benefited much from outstanding trench play. Michigan still has the talent to contend for a national championship, and its head coach went 2-0 in games ranked in the top 10 last season. This is despite the numerous changes that have occurred.
