After starting the season as a leading contender for Defensive Player of the Year, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt experienced a notable decline in performance toward the end of the year.

In the Steelers’ final four games, including their playoff loss to the Ravens, Watt failed to record a single statistic.

Throughout his NFL career, Watt has been known for his candid assessments of his performances, whether positive or negative. Following the season-ending loss, he maintained that transparency during a media session on Monday.

“Definitely feel like, schematically, it’s been a tough year for how offenses scheme things to try to get me out of the game,” Watt admitted. “It’s going to take a big breakdown for me to figure out how to make plays.”

Watt emphasized that he wasn’t placing the blame solely on opposing teams’ adjustments, acknowledging that his own play needs improvement.

“I’m not making excuses for myself at all. I want to make plays,” Watt said. “I need to find ways to win against chips and slides and things like that. I’m going to work tirelessly this offseason to address it.”

He also expressed a willingness to adapt his playstyle, even if it means changing the approach that has worked for him in previous years, to better contribute to the team.

“I need to be more open to moving around and finding ways to impact games as much as possible,” Watt explained. “You all know I want to affect the game more than anyone, but I don’t want to selfishly take another guy’s spot or go somewhere else just because I think I could have a better rush from the left side.”

With Watt set to become a free agent at the end of next season, the upcoming year will be crucial for both him and the Steelers as they navigate their futures.
