Georgia’s redshirt sophomore QB, Gunner Stockton has embraced the wait in the QB room at Georgia. He talks about his opportunity Saturday to prove he can play.
The quarterback position is unlike any other in football in the sense that there’s typically only one guy — leaving the rest of the position group is left to develop behind ultra-closed doors at the University of Georgia. There are no preseason games in which a third-string freshman gets the entire second half. No… spring scrimmages are really all there is to see from a public’s perspective of this one position.
Stockton spoke to the media on Tuesday about his opportunity to get extended reps both this spring with the exiting of Brock Vandagriff and the assumption of the backup role behind Carson Beck.
“I mean, of course, is a perfect example. He showed resilience. And he’s waited his turn. And I mean, he’s worked hard. And he’s uh, he’s proven that he’s, he’s one of the best quarterbacks. And it’s just a privilege to kind of take from him and just get to learn from him was pretty awesome.”
Stockton sees Saturday as an opportunity to continue to prove that he can play this position at a high level:
“I want to show everybody that I can play. That’s what I tried to do in the Orange Bowl. And I thought I did and heck, it’s an opportunity to just go play a game. That’s, the way I look at it. Play with everybody.”
It’s been made very evident by Kirby Smart that Georgia will soon be active in the transfer portal for another quarterback. He’s mentioned several times in recent press conferences about needing to be at the four-scholarship quarterbacks threshold he holds this roster to. It’s something that Stockton spoke openly about Tuesday:
“Coach Smart always said, he wants four quarterbacks and scholarship quarterbacks on the roster and heck it probably should be at the University of Georgia. I mean as quarterback why not? Why not? Would you want to come here so heck, it should be a battle it should be a competition at quarterback.”
