Guns N’ Roses employs everything from Korn-esque clean/FX’ed guitars in the verse to a big, angular chorus with a completely blown-out vocal track. It’s not a bad song (or a great song), but it’s definitely out of the ordinary for Guns N’ Roses… and maybe could’ve used another part or two outside those verses and choruses. “The General” follows Guns N’ Roses other 2023 single “Perhaps”.

Guns N’ Roses vocalist Axl Rose and guitarist Slash were in the studio listening to “new mixes” earlier this year, though it’s not clear if that had anything to do with “The General” and “Perhaps”. Then in a later interview with longtime production manager Tom Mayhue in an interview prior to the band’s Paris show, it was revealed that Guns N’ Roses is plotting more Appetite For Destruction-type material.

“It sounds great. It’s a lot more kind of Appetite [For Destruction]-orientated. They had a lot of songs. When the band went in originally and recorded Appetite For Destruction, I think they recorded, like, 29 songs. So there’s a bunch of other music that was left over that didn’t make the first record. I think there’s only 11 songs on the first record.”
