San Diego Padres Avoid Arbitration, Agree to $7.75 Million Contract with Pitcher Michael King, as Manager Mike Shildt Announces Padres’ Starting Shortstop for 2025 Season

The San Diego Padres have successfully avoided arbitration with right-handed pitcher Michael King, agreeing to a one-year, $7.75 million contract.

King, who was acquired in a high-profile trade last season, has quickly become a key figure in the Padres’ pitching rotation.

Known for his versatility and ability to excel both as a starter and reliever, King’s performance in the 2024 season solidified his value, making this contract a strategic move for the Padres as they aim to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming year.

King posted impressive numbers last season, showcasing a strong strikeout rate and the ability to handle high-leverage situations.

His durability and adaptability have been crucial for a Padres team looking to strengthen its rotation depth. Padres General Manager A.J. Preller praised King’s contributions, stating, “Michael has been a tremendous asset for our pitching staff.

His work ethic and competitive nature make him a perfect fit for our organization, and we’re excited to have him locked in for the 2025 season.”

In addition to the King contract news, Padres manager Mike Shildt made a significant announcement regarding the team’s infield. Shildt confirmed that  Xander Bogaerts, will be the Padres’ starting shortstop for the 2025 season, ending speculation about who would take over the role.

With the departure of Ha-Seong Kim and shifting infield dynamics, the shortstop position had been a major question mark heading into spring training.

Shildt expressed confidence in his decision, stating, “We’ve evaluated all our options, and [Player’s Name] has shown the consistency, defensive prowess, and offensive upside we need at shortstop.

He’s earned this opportunity, and we’re excited to see what he brings to the role.”

With King secured and clarity at shortstop, the Padres are making strategic moves to solidify their roster. As they prepare for the 2025 season, these decisions reflect the organization’s commitment to competing at the highest level, with a focus on both pitching stability and defensive strength.
