JJ Redick’s Home Lost to Fires; NBA Postpones Hornets-Lakers Game

The NBA postponed Thursday’s game in Los Angeles between the Hornets and Lakers due to the devastating wildfires that have destroyed over 5,300 structures in the area, including the home of Lakers coach JJ Redick.

Sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania that Redick’s rental home in Pacific Palisades was among the properties lost in the largest of several wildfires sweeping through the Los Angeles area this week. Redick confirmed on Tuesday, before the Lakers’ game against the Mavericks in Dallas, that his family was among those forced to evacuate.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr also revealed that his childhood home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed. Kerr shared that his 90-year-old mother, Ann, had evacuated and was safe.

This marks the second consecutive day a sporting event in downtown Los Angeles has been postponed. On Wednesday, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings canceled their game against the Calgary Flames. Additionally, the NFL moved Monday’s NFC wild-card playoff game between the Rams and Vikings from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

“We’re heartbroken for Los Angeles,” the Lakers said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this unimaginable situation. We are deeply grateful to the first responders and everyone coming together in this time of need. Tonight’s game will be rescheduled to prioritize what matters most.”

The NBA has not yet announced a makeup date for the Hornets-Lakers game. In a statement, the league expressed solidarity with the affected community, thanking firefighters and first responders for their bravery and extending thoughts and prayers to those affected by the wildfires.

The fires, fueled by extraordinary winds, have caused widespread destruction across the Los Angeles metropolitan area. One significant blaze near the Hollywood Hills, close to the entertainment industry’s hub, was contained by Thursday morning.
