Penny Hardaway provides injury update ahead of Memphis basketball’s road game vs. UAB
Penny Hardaway said the injuries that cropped up on No. 22 Memphis basketball during last week’s loss at Tulane did not linger long.
The Tigers’ coach said Thursday that Jaykwon Walton (ribs), Nae’Qwan Tomlin (eye) and Nicholas Jourdain (food poisoning) will be back to full strength for Sunday’s game at UAB (4 p.m. CT, ESPN).
“Everybody is healthy,” Hardaway said. “Everybody’s much better.”
Walton scored 11 points in the first half of the 81-79 loss to the Green Wave but did not play in the second. He wore a back brace on the bench for the rest of the game. Tomlin, who had six points and seven rebounds, played sparingly down the stretch in New Orleans after his eye was scratched. Jourdain was limited to just two points, two rebounds, two assists and one block in 18 minutes thanks to an upset stomach.
“If you don’t think that affected us in the last game, then something’s wrong with that,” Hardaway said. “(Jourdain) shouldn’t have even played at Tulane, man. You could just tell, if you know his game, (he was) all off-kilter.”
Hardaway added Tomlin did not practice Wednesday but was back on the court Thursday. Jonathan Pierre also missed last week’s game at Tulane due to an illness. He has since returned to practice.
Memphis (15-4, 4-2 AAC) has lost back-to-back games after winning 10 straight. UAB (12-7, 4-2) lost at Charlotte Tuesday but had won eight out of nine games before that.
