Purdue, an expected No. 1 seed in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament later this month, suffered a devastating injury loss during the Big Ten tournament on Friday.

Braden Smith, a starting point guard for the Boilermakers, exited Friday’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal vs. Michigan State with a concerning injury.

Smith planted awkwardly while driving to the basket in the second half and was unable to finish his layup attempt. The medical staff tended to him for a few minutes before he left the game and went back to the locker room.

Smith has been one of Purdue’s top players this season. The talented guard is averaging 13.0 points, 7.2 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game this season.

It’s never a good sign when a player suffers a non-contact injury. But the good news is Smith was seen walking under his own power while heading back to the locker room.
