We will never play for Rotherham again: The 12 Rotherham United players likely to exit from…

Rotherham United are once again battling near the bottom of the Championship.

The Millers managed to survive in the Championship last season fairly comfortably, after having many seasons bouncing between the Championship and League One.

The Millers are currently rock bottom of the Championship, and look to be heading for another relegation to League One. With a potential relegation on the cards, we could see a number of players depart. Especially as many of the first-team squad are out of contract at the end of the season.

This means we could see a massive overhaul at Rotherham in the summer.

Here we go through who could leave Rotherham in the summer.

The right-back is in his second season at the New York Stadium, having signed in 2022 following the expiry of his contract against Middlesbrough.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and at the age of 37, he may be nearing hanging up his boots.

The 32-year-old winger has been at Rotherham since the summer of 2021, joining from Millwall for an undisclosed fee.

Ferguson has only made one appearance this season after recently returning from a long-term injury, having had three rounds of hernia surgery. His contract is up at the end of the season, so with his injury problems, it might be likely he will leave.

Ayala joined Rotherham in October, having been without a club since leaving Blackburn Rovers in the summer.

He has only featured a handful of times in the league, and has not played this calendar year due to injury. His contract is up at the end of the season.

Sean Morrison

Morrison has been with the club for a year since joining from Cardiff City.

The 33-year-old has been playing fairly regularly this season, but with his contract up at the end of the season, the Millers may feel they can get a younger body through the door to replace him.

Sam Clucas

Clucas joined in September after leaving Stoke City in the summer, where he made over 100 appearances.

Clucas has been a regular, but is yet another older member of the squad with his contract set to expire.

Grant Hall

Another player with injury problems, Hall has been limited to just six league appearances due to a recurring hip problem.

His contract is up at the end of the season too, and it may be best to let him go due to his injury problems.

Tyler Blackett

Blackett joined in March 2023 after leaving FC Cincinnati in the MLS.

He has had an injury-hit campaign, having not featured since October due to a hamstring injury. His contract is up at the end of the season.

Jamie Lindsay

Lindsay has been at Rotherham since 2018, arriving from Ross County in Scotland.

He has made over 150 appearances for Rotherham, and has been a great servant for the club.

At 28, he still has plenty to give, but his contract is up at the end of the campaign, and he has been more of a backup player this season.

The Portuguese midfielder joined from Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the summer, and has been a great option in centre midfield.

At 30, he still has plenty to offer, but he may want to leave if the Millers get relegated. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Hakeem Odoffin

Odoffin has been a brilliant player since his arrival from Hamilton in 2021.

A regular starter so far this term, Rotherham should be doing all they can to keep him in the summer.

But his contract is up, and Odoffin may feel he will want to test himself elsewhere.

Ollie Rathbone

Rathbone will be in a similar situation to Odoffin. He moved in the same summer as Odoffin, joining from Rochdale.

He has gone to make over 100 appearances for the club, and has been a regular starter in the Millers midfield.

Viktor Johansson

The only one on this list whose contract does not expire in the summer, Johansson is arguably Rotherham’s best player.

He has slowly cemented himself as the no.1 keeper at the New York Stadium across the last four seasons.

Last season was his best to date, keeping 11 clean sheets in 43 Championship games.

Leeds United were interested last summer, and Sheffield United, along with teams in Europe, were interested in January too.

Johansson may feel it is time to leave in the summer in order to play for the chance of Premier League football – regardless of what division Rotherham are in.
